The development of new technologies enables learners to evolve with the information age by allowing them to learn more effectively, efficiently, flexibly and comfortably. In order to achieve smart universities, the concept of smart education may be introduced. This is learning in digital age and is increasingly becoming popular as new technology evolves. Learners can utilize smart devices for accessing digital resources through wireless network and immerse in both personalized and seamless learning. For example, smartphones have become an important part IT infrastructure bringing forth benefits such as increased productivity as well as use of social media which is popular amongst the youth. Other technologies such as cloud computing, learning analytics, big data, Internet of things (IoT), etc., may be used to promote the emergence of smart education in smart universities. Internet of Things (IoT) provides a thematic umbrella which enables educators to combine the various theoretical aspects that are found in computer science with substantial problems of our day to day lives. As such, practical lessons like building IoT device prototypes may be considered for smart learning. This may be done as a means for teaching new technologies as well as providing recommendations for best practices for facilitating personalized learning in similar contexts of smart learning. African learners will be able to move ahead with times and become more innovative and compete with other continents. Technology usage might produce comparatively more significant increases in academic achievement in African SMART Universities than would non-usage. The purpose of the abstract is to provide insight on the Concepts, Characteristics and Technologies used in smart Universities in Africa. It aims to investigate the possible relationship between students' use of technology and their achievements in African Universities.
